5 ideas for nature weekends in the Vendee
When winter arrives, walks become refreshing and you can see the natural world in a new light. Treat yourself to a getaway in the Vendee and be dazzled by the clear skies and soothing sunsets. Here are 5 ways to start the year, immersing yourself in the natural world of the Vendee.
1. OYSTERS AND VENDÉEN WINE ON THE COAST – TIME TO RELAX AT PORT DE LA GUITTIÈRE
Strolling in the open air at Talmont Saint Hilaire, well wrapped up, in the middle of February offers you a chance to connect with land and sea, particularly in the picturesque oyster farming village of Port de la Guittière, the smallest oyster farming port in France. The oysters are delicious and go particularly well with a glass of AOC Fiefs Vendéens wine. Taste them on the spot, or take a dozen for a picnic with a view of the sea in Jard. Next morning, head for Pointe du Payré and its holm oak forest where you can continue your surf and turf experience with a woody note. In the afternoon say “Hello!” to La Tranche sur Mer, the little California of the Vendée. A favourite visit is the Grouin du Cou Lighthouse, the views from which will enrich your walk. You can end this getaway with a sunset view of the Terrière beach.

On this island break, you can take advantage of the calm of winter to survey the island and be captivated by the beauty of this place. Here, we should mention the majestic Soux beach and the fabulous old castle of the Ile d'Yeu. The waves seem to take malicious pleasure in crashing against its towers. The result is a spectacle combining the inescapable charm of the ocean and the elusive side of the castle standing there, in front of you, a rare moment of perspective. The next day, you can stroll through Port-Joinville with its fishermen's houses and see just how beautiful Île d'Yeu is.
