First bike riding tip N°1: the different types of cycle routes
Choose your playground.

The Vendée’s cycle routes use different types of paths: cycle paths, greenways, and mixed tracks…
Cycle routes and greenways (green)
This means that the route is reserved for cycling, without cars, and has ideal security and safety conditions.
They can also be used by pedestrians and roller blade users. Separated and generally far from traffic, they often are on the edge of remarkable natural sites. These paths allow you to get close to a beautiful and fragile natural environment. But at the same time being able to respect.

Shared cycle lanes (red)
These are mainly the small roads and agricultural paths that you take in the Marais poitevin and in the Vendée Vallée area. Traffic is low on these roads, but caution is always required.
In some towns and on the seafronts of certain seaside resorts, you will also find bike lanes. These cycle lanes indicate the section of the road which is reserved for cyclists. Again, caution should be used for children, even though motorists have learned to be vigilant.
