Beach Safety - what do the beach flags mean?

The triangular-shaped seaside flags are generally red, green or orange to indicate to holiday makers whether they can swim or not. Their presence indicates that they are in an area supervised by lifeguards. The absence of a flag at the top of the pole means there is no beach surveillance.

  • Green flag: supervised swimming - the sea is calm, swimming is considered safe, and lifeguards are on duty.
  • Orange or yellow flag: dangerous but supervised swimming - lifeguards are present but swimmers must be careful. Swimming is not, however, prohibited.
  • Red flag: no swimming - in stormy conditions or high winds, waves, pollution or in the presence of jellyfish, swimming is prohibited.
  • Purple flag: in case of pollution the purple flag can be hoisted and prohibits access to the beach and swimming.
