Beach safety - What do yellow buoys mean?
Having made sure that you can go for a swim and you already have your feet in the water…. what are these yellow buoys that you can see all around you? What are they for?
These yellow buoys are used to delimit areas and channels, so that swimmers and people practicing water sports (water skiing, windsurfing) can live together in complete safety.
The supervised swimming areas are delimited on the ground in width, by signs indicating "supervised swimming limit», surmounted by a blue flag. The width of this supervised area is determined by the configuration of the beach and the number of lifeguards available. Obviously, in this "corridor" you bathe under the watchful eye of the lifeguards.
Offshore heading towards the open sea, the demarcation is made by yellow buoys roughly 300 meters from the edge of the beach. Sometimes these areas reserve the first 100 meters for swimming.
