Remarkable French gardens: Vendean, medieval and exotic
The Vendée offers a wide range of public or private parks and gardens. From regular gardens, mixed gardens, medieval gardens, vegetable gardens, formal gardens, landscaped parks as well as quality contemporary gardens. Among these, there are four "Remarkable Gardens", a label awarded by the Ministry of Culture to gardens and parks of cultural, aesthetic, historical or botanical interest.


Le Jardin du Bâtiment, a Remarkable French Garden owned by an international musician
The Jardin du Bâtiment in Thiré was created by the famous Franco-American conductor William Christie. It was listed as a Historic Monument in 2006 and a “Remarkable Garden” in 2004.
The garden surrounds a beautiful 17th century Logis and is inspired by Italian and French Mannerist and Baroque gardens.
Boxwood beds, yew and hornbeam hedges, lime trees follow one another on the terrace and form an outstanding natural architecture, full of charm.
Every year, at the end of August, the Department (County) of Vendée and the Arts Florissants invite visitors to a unique experience. That of the Festival "In the Gardens of William Christie" mixing baroque music and the opportunity to discover these remarkable gardens.

Le Logis de Chaligny gardens based on Napoleonic land registers
The Logis de Chaligny at Sainte-Pexine, was built in the 16th century. Created around the Logis, the gardens have undergone a profound restoration, based on the lines which appear in the Napoleonic land register. A vegetable garden, an aromatic plant garden, shady retreats... The Logis de Chaligny gardens are made up of multiple universes which makes them places of peace and tranquility.
The Medieval garden at Bazoges en Pareds, thyme to learn about medicinal plants
This medieval-inspired garden poetically combines the colours and fragrances of vegetables and flowers. Contained in several garden patches which also have medicinal herbs and aromatic plants. Explore this magical under the shade of the grapevines, following the orchard and old rose bushes in the garden of curiosities…. or the witch’s garden were tales and legends guide visitors.
The garden can be visited along with the 14th century keep and the local Bazoges en Pareds Museum.


Le Parc de l’Auneau, an unusual Tuscan style garden at Chantonnay
The Parc de L’ Auneau has an ideal location, overlooking the Petit Lay valley. It offers panoramic views over this Tuscan style landscape. The Villa-Castel, a mansion dating from 1899, adds harmony to the entire place. In this very sober environment, we discover the traditional 19th century trees: blue cedar, Liquidambar, purple beech... The old garden wall is trellised with lines of old roses, most of them English.
