Le Gouffre à l'île d'Elle, an incredible 17th century Hydraulic construction
This unique hydraulic structure was the result of the know-how of the 17th century scientific elite. At the time, the main concern was to drain this marshy area. The construction was built in 1663-1664 to prevent the waters of Vendée and the Vix canal from crossing each other and mixing.
